Football

Sports Starlets Football Rob loves football, and so will your children. It’s England's national sport and is great for developing teamwork and tactics. We can't promise that your child will end up able to 'Bend it like Beckham', but they will have fun trying. During our football sessions, emphasis is placed on the bilateral use of feet, whilst dribbling the ball, or shooting at goal. Basic passing and game play will make these session a FUN introduction to football.

Hockey

Sports Starlets Hockey Debbie loves coaching hockey. Well she does have over 20 years experience playing for Merton Hockey Club, and is more than happy to pass on her experience and enthusiasm for the game. As with any ball sport, control and coordination is the key. Our specialised games encourage children to hold the stick in the right position, and move the ball with care and precision.

Basketball

Sports Starlets Basketball Basketball is a fast and athletic part of our programme, and the children love it. The sense of achievement as the ball falls through the hoop to score a ‘basket’ puts a smile on their faces. During the session the children learn a range of passing techniques. They start to gradually bounce and catch the ball and to bouncing the ball continually with their palms. Again using both hands to help developed bilateral coordination. Being confident with the ball is a must for most sports but especially in a game such as Basketball.

Tennis

Sports Starlets Tennis Tennis requires skill and co-ordination, either solo against a single opponent or as part of a pair working together. Pre-empting where your opponent will aim the ball and judging speed and trajectory is all part of the fun. Initially we start out with a racket and ball per child, and talk about the importance of safety within the session. As with all our sessions safety is paramount, and encouraging your child to be safe with the equipment gives them a sense of responsibility. Your child may tell you that they have taken their ball ‘for a walk’ or ‘Made a Tennis Sandwich’. These games encourage Tennis skills at a fun level, whilst instilling valuable skills should your child wish to take their Tennis to a higher level.

Rugby

Sports Starlets Rugby Rugby is a fun fast and active game that, like many others, was invented on British soil. We introduce basic skills such as throwing the ball from the side of the body and ‘scoring a try’. Trys are where they place ball under posts, or try line. Once a try is scored, they can kick the ball over the post (think H, shape) to score a conversion and get more points. ‘Drop Kicks’ and ‘Grubber Kicks’ may be terms your child will speak about. Although our games are specialised for their age range, we use the correct terminology so that when your child progresses to school and beyond they will have a sound knowledge of the game and its terminology.

Baseball

Sports Starlets Baseball This fast paced game from across the pond will keep your child fit and active. Like all ball games your chid will develop hand-eye coordination. We will use both fielding and pitching techniques during the sessions, but the highlight of these sessions is hitting the ball over our ‘Batting Stand’ and running around the diamond to score a home run. During the fielding drills we will practice both over arm and under arm throws, as well as balancing whilst trying to make that perfect pitch.

Badminton

Sports Starlets Badminton Badminton is a slower paced than other racket sports, but certainly not less fun. Using a shuttlecock and judging its trajectory is challenging, but in our fun ‘Space Themed’ sessions your child will be landing on the moon and hitting the rocket into ‘infinity and beyond’. Badminton requires a high level of coordination and control and in time every child will reap the benefits of this sport.

Target Games

Sports Starlets Target Target games focus on reinforcing skills that we use in individual sports. Focusing on these skills will help to embed the foundations of good technique. We use targets such as hoops, goals and target mats to practice our kicking and throwing. Whether a ball is kicked or thrown its trajectory and speed will always have different forces acting upon it. Acquiring the skill and ability to track a ball at an early age will have enormous benefits in later sporting pursuits.

Cricket

Sports Starlets Cricket We don't like cricket, we love it! So will your child as they catch the spirit of this traditional English game. Coordination is vital in hitting a six or catching the opposition out. We practice the basic throwing and bowling techniques, using stumps as the target. Whilst batting, a rolling ball brings huge cheers from all in the class.

Athletics

Sports Starlets Athletics Athletics is more than just running around a track. We utilise our athletic session to improve jumping techniques during long, triple and in some cases the high jump. Shot Putt is always a favourite, as is the relay and the funny running drills. Our mini hurdles are loved by the children and staff alike, who are always keen to show off their skills.

Lacrosse

Sports Starlets Lacrolsse Here's a game that was not invented on British soil. Lacrosse is a game originated by Native Americans. Using mini equipment we go fishing to collect the balls. We learn how to control the lacrosse scoop to keep the ball inside, or to be able to throw the ball to our friends.

Volleyball

Sports Starlets Volleyball Volleyball is a great game to introduce pair work, by trying to keep the ball from touching the floor. We learn the basic techniques of ‘digging’, ‘setting’ and ‘spiking’, all with a soft beach volleyball so that little hands as safe.

Other Games

Sports Starlets Other Activities There are many more sports that we could incorporate into our programme that will develop your child's overall physical development. In the past these have included Hoop Games, Agility and balancing games, and basic ball skills. We cannot express how important reinforcement and positive feedback is to develop skills, which we hope in turn will lead to your child loving sport throughout their life.
